USW: Carey Salt workers win $7.33M back pay settlement

COTE BLANCHE, La. —It came more than six years later, but 90-100 present and former workers at Compass Minerals in Cote Blanche, La. – the old Carey Salt mine – won $7,33 million in back pay, the Steelworkers and the National Labor Relations Board said.

The settlement also resolves issues in a 2010 unfair labor practices strike over Carey’s refusal to pay overtime and refusal to bargain in good faith, union President Leo Gerard said.  “This situation was a result of the actions of Carey Salt’s former management,” he added. “We’re proud of the way we’ve been able to work with the company’s current management team, as well as the NLRB, to reach a fair and equitable settlement.” The new firm, Compass, and USW Local 14425 signed contracts in 2012 and 2016.
