USDA & NFL Announce $35 Million School Equipment Grant

POLITICO Pro reports Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack appeared with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Feb. 5 in San Francisco, Calif., to announce $35 million in new grants to help schools buy better kitchen equipment, addressing one of the biggest barriers schools face to serving healthier foods.

The USDA says the funds offer a significant increase in school equipment spending. The Agriculture Department’s total grants will be brought to $215 million. Thirty million dollars of the money will come from USDA and $5 million from Fuel Up to Play 60, a children’s nutrition and physical activity program founded by the NFL and the National Dairy Council.

“This commitment from our partners will ensure schools have the equipment they need to provide kids with a well-balanced meal, promoting childhood health and wellness,” Vilsack said.
