Transit Union Leaders Push for Fair Bus Driver Pay

According to amalgamated Transit Union President Larry Hanley and AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department President Ed Wytkind intercity bus drivers are entitled to a high pay. With this thought they began a minimum wage and overtime campaign for bus drivers.

Not paying bus drives can be dangerous or even deadly. Low wages force bus drivers to have a second or third job and then they are too tired to drive safely. This causes about 1000 passenger deaths each year. The cheap fares often advertised may be the result of low-wage bus driving jobs.

The goal of the campaign is to bring bus drivers under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), but Congress fails to acknowledge the importance of the issue. Bringing bus drivers under the FLSA will better for the bus drivers and better for passengers everywhere.
