Echoing the same themes as they did 50 years ago, thousands of unionists and their civil rights allies marched to the Lincoln Memorial on August 24, demanding jobs and freedom, particularly living wage jobs and voting rights.

The original March on Washington held August 28, 1963 was a call for jobs, freedom, equal education and voting rights. Despite the progress our country has made over the past 50 years, the fight for many of these rights is ongoing today.

As the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington nears, AFSA encourages its members and supporters to take part in the many activities scheduled in celebration and remembrance of this historic event. The Aug. 28, 1963 march led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and other progressive programs and rights that benefit Americans today. […]

AFSA is proud to support the King Center and the AFL-CIO in the official unveiling of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, keenly aware that Reverend King’s dream of social and economic justice is yet to be fully realized. We take special pride as an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, as it hosts a National Symposium on “The American Dream: Jobs and Justice” on Friday, August 26.
