Sen. Alexander: Rename Labor Department?

WASHINGTON—It was the only nasty crack in an otherwise sedate Senate hearing, but Labor Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said twice that the government should rename the Labor Department – as the Department of the Workforce.

Alexander made the crack first while introducing Alexander Acosta, GOP President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the department. The Tennessean specifically linked his gibe to declining labor union density in the private sector.

He repeated it at the end of the session. He has partisan precedent: When the GOP took over the U.S. House in 1995, it deleted “Labor” from the Education and Labor Committee. It’s now “Education and the Workforce.”
