Sec. of Labor Tom Perez Discusses Fair Labor Standards for Home Care Workers

On Tuesday, AFSA joined a call with Secretary of Labor, Tom Perez discussing the administration’s issued rule to extend Fair Labor Standards to home care workers. While, 90 percent of home care workers are women, 50 percent are minorities with most relying on public assistance due to the the low wages provided by their work.

Perez discussed how no workers with full time jobs should be living in poverty and the importance of leveling the playing field to stabilize the workforce, increase the quality of care for the elderly and attract more workers to the field.

This rule extending minimum wage and labor protections to home care workers takes effect January 1, 2015, allowing time for states and caregivers to make the necessary program adjustments.
