Resolutions: Student Privacy

An AFSA resolution on Student Privacy emphasized the union’s strong belief that students’ personally identifiable data should be protected from data breaches through appropriate network security measures and from inappropriate uses by school service providers, including any sale of that data to third parties.

Since AFSA also believes deeply in the ability of data and technology to improve student engagement and achievement by personalizing learning, to enhance parent involvement in their children’s education, and augment the skills and knowledge of educators, the resolution struck a reasoned balance.

It called for strongly supporting educating members regarding student data privacy and security issues, and further called for supporting legislation that “balances between protecting and securing student data and promoting personalized learning informed by data and powered by educational technology.”

The resolution passed.
