Rank-and-File Union Members Work to Stop the TPP

VANCOUVER, Wash.—United Association of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters, Local 290 members, who are also a married couple, are passionate about stopping the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). They are active in collecting signatures for a petition demanding congress votes in opposition of the TPP.

They plan to take their signatures, so far 300, to Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, both D-Washington. They both voted “fast track” legislation, which may make it easier for deals like the TPP to get passed by Congress. The “fast track” calls for limited debate and no amendments.

Additional efforts include Local 290 purchasing hardhat stickers stating, “Stop the TPP.” This married couple and others don’t consider the TPP “free trade.” The TPP is aimed at providing free trade among the U.S., Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Sultanate of Brunei, Vietnam and others.

Many feel the TPP is being passed behind closed doors, but Clinton and Trump have both expressed opposition. If the TPP is not passed before January, it will be considered dead on arrival. The United States imported $500 billion more goods and services than it exported in 2015, and members in opposition feel it will become increasingly worse with the TPP.
