As school leaders, we pride ourselves on creating safe and secure learning environments for our staff and students. We understand the importance of quality working conditions and the consequences of an unsafe environment. It is with pride that AFSA will join the labor movement to observe Workers Memorial Day, to remember all those who have lost their lives, or have been injured on the job on April 28, 2016.

Although unions and our allies helped enact the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Mine Safety and Health Act, today there are still thousands of workers killed on the job as a result of unregulated hazards, and millions more are injured and diseased as a result of uncontrolled conditions. Further, business groups have launched an all out attack on working people, by seeking to eliminate existing protections and to prevent further safety measures from being implemented.

That is why this year’s theme, “Working. For Safe Jobs,” is so critical. We urge you to join in observing Workers Memorial Day, and to plan activities, actions or observances in your communities to highlight the importance of a safe working environment. Please visit www.aflcio.org/Issues/Job-Safety/WorkersMemorialDay for ideas and information to assist you in planning, and to download flyers and fact sheets about Workers Memorial Day that you can share with your colleagues.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to providing your colleagues and students with a safe environment, and for joining all workers in fighting for safe working conditions for all.
