Mentoring

The American Federation of School Administrators believes that strong mentoring programs designed to assist new and/or struggling public school administrators and supervisors can be beneficial to their professional careers. Such mentoring programs must be negotiated with the local affiliate and participation must being voluntary. The development, implementation and evaluation of such programs must be a joint effort between the school district and the local affiliate.

 

The Federation feels that a clearly defined process that outlines the duties and responsibilities of both parties involved must be stated. The selection criteria for mentors must be clearly defined and must include specific training and compensation for those candidates who are chosen. The federation also believes that any documentation resulting from the mentoring process must be confidential and the sole property of the person mentored and must not be included in the participant’s personnel file.
