Meet Miss USA…The union member

LAS VEGAS –Meet the new Miss USA…a union member.

Kara McCullough, 25, a member of Treasury Employees Chapter 208, won the crown at the pageant in Las Vegas in early May, the union reports. She’s the second straight national winner who represented Washington, D.C.

McCullough is also a skilled young woman with a demanding job: Members of Chapter 208 work at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees and regulates the nation’s nuclear power plants and similar facilities. And that’s exactly what she does.

According to her NRC bio, posted on its website after she won the crown, McCullough is an emergency preparedness specialist at the NRC’s Office of Nuclear Security And Incident Response.

There, McCullough reviews nuclear emergency plans that power plants and other nuclear facilities must file, and she’s a member of the agency’s incident response teams. If there’s a potentially dangerous radiation leak, she goes. McCullough was well-prepared for the task, with a B.S. degree in chemistry with a concentration in radiochemistry, from South Carolina State University.
