Labor News Around the Nation

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. —AFSCME added 6,000 new members in October as an independent union, Public Employees Local 1, voted to affiliate, the two unions said. The board of Local 1, which represents public workers across eight Northern California counties, told its members that joining AFSCME, the largest union in the AFL-CIO, would give them access to the federation’s resources and expertise.

Local President Mike West, in a fact sheet sent to members, also said the union cannot afford to go it alone any more. “We don’t do this work for fame and glory. We do it to keep our communities strong. Joining AFSCME helps make sure we have the tools we need to advocate quality public services for all,” he said.
