Labor news around the nation

POMONA, Calif. —Some 50 mechanics at Foothills Transit, a Los Angeles suburban bus system represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1756, had to strike for a day, August 7, when the local and managers for Keolis Transit America, a private firm area cities hired, did not reach a new contract.

The sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding the next day and service resumed. The last outstanding issue is if the pact will last four years, or two years with a reopener clause, said ATU Local President Richard Connell.

The strike became extremely effective when Foothills Transit bus drivers, members of Teamsters Local 848, honored the ATU picket line. That idled 19 of the agency’s bus lines.
