Summary of Bills:

It amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to:

Require annual state and local educational agency (LEA) report cards to include info on school health and PE programs. The bill would promote healthy, active lifestyles for students with ESEA grant programs. It revises the professional development program for teachers and principals to include training for PE and health teachers. Finally, the bill directs the Secretary of Education to contract with National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for a study to asses the affect health and PE education have on students’ ability to learn.

Why AFSA Supports These Bills:

This bill would put a greater emphasis on physical education and health programs in local schools across the U.S. It would make schools more accountable for health and physical education programs by training the teachers in those two programs. This bill would help children grow up healthy and fit.
