H.R. 1199/S 403 – Safe Schools Improvement Act

Purpose: To support states in enacting policies to prevent incidents of bullying and make schools safer.

Summary: Amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to require states to direct their local educational agencies (LEAs) to establish policies that prevent and prohibit conduct, including bullying and harassment, that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive to: (1) limit students’ ability to participate in, or benefit from school programs; or (2) create a hostile or abusive educational environment that adversely affects their education.

Status: Senate- 2/28/2013 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

House- 4/23/2013 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education.
