Gerard Urges Progressives To Campaign ‘For Kids and Grandkids’

WASHINGTON —Progressives must  campaign to defend U.S. values, institutions and programs “for our kids and grandkids,” Steel Workers President Leo Gerard says.

Accepting the “Progressive Champion” award from the Campaign for America’s Future at a Nov. 6 dinner/fundraiser, Gerard said the Radical Right aims at cutting everything from pay to pensions to Social Security to health care to the environment.

“We have to come to grips with the reality that not any one group can turn back the Right Wing tide,” Gerard declared in off-the-cuff remarks.  “But I want our kids and grandkids to have a better life than we had.  That has to be our legacy.”

Gerard told the crowd that unity among progressives would win the war against the Right – if all fought hard for each others’ causes.  In the past, progressives have been notable for giving lip service only to workers’ rights, though he did not say so.  “The country doesn’t have to be this way,” he said.  “This isn’t God-given or ‘the hand of the market.’  We won’t win every fight, but if we don’t fight, we’re gonna lose.”
