Federal agency backs Steelworkers, plans tariffs on Chinese truck, bus tires

WASHINGTON —The U.S. International Trade Commission, agreeing with a case the Steelworkers brought more than a year ago, has ruled that China illegally dumped truck and bus tires in the U.S. It recommended tariffs and duties ranging from 9 percent-65 percent.

“Every sector of the U.S. tire industry has been under siege from China’s unfair and illegal trade practices,” said union Secretary-Treasurer Stan Johnson, who chairs its rubber and tire bargaining conference.

“USW has consistently fought for relief for the entire rubber and tire industry, from passenger car and off-road vehicle tires to truck and bus tires. We’re extremely pleased to see strong action to protect good-paying, family-supporting jobs and preserve market share for American employers.”
