Education Department Encourages Schools to Welcome Refugees

POLITICO Pro reports that the Education Department has released guidance on John King’s first day as acting secretary. It discusses how it’s possible to welcome refugees from Syria and other countries while maintaining safe school communities.

“As we stand by our principles as a nation and continue to welcome refugees to our communities, we also must be vigilant about maintaining safe, respectful, and nondiscriminatory learning environments for all students in our schools and institutions,” says the letter sent to school districts, colleges and universities.

The letter signed by King and former Education Secretary Arne Duncan, highlighted that creating safe learning communities doesn’t mean “chilling free expression about the issues of the day.”
