‘Drain the swamp?’ A top House GOP leader thinks federal workers are the swamp

WASHINGTON —When President Donald Trump (R) talks about “draining the swamp,” he means Washington lobbyists. When House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., utters those words, he means federal workers. And that pisses them off.

“Career bureaucrats who never face the voters wield punishing authority with little to no accountability. If there’s a swamp in Washington, this is it,” McCarthy alleged in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed. The feds, of whom one in every three are veterans, were furious, reports their union, the Government Employees (AFGE).

One telling comment came from Eric Young, a corrections officer and Gulf War vet: “I’ve served our country for 22 years behind the prison walls protecting our community and working among society’s worse criminals — Mafia, narco-drug traffickers, gang leaders and killers. We are severely underfunded and have already had a two-time war veteran murdered inside a prison by two killers. Nothing about that is ‘swamp-like.'”
