Congress Blocks Obama-Era Accountability Rule for Schools

“The Senate voted 50-49 today to undo the Obama administration’s rule for holding schools accountable for student performance under the Every Student Succeeds Act. The Congressional Review Act resolution, which has already cleared the House, now heads to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it.

Proponents of the measure argue that the rule was federal overreach by the Obama administration. But Rob Portman (R-Ohio) joined Democrats and a wide range of business, labor and civil rights groups in opposing the effort to kill the rule, which they said was critical to ensuring states are held accountable for all students.”
