Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.

USMC-09611Today we honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy, celebrating the historic bond between Labor and Civil Rights. For the two movements are truly one, in their unyielding commitment to equality and social justice.

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity,” said Dr. King.  As the leaders of our nation’s public schools, AFSA members live by this motto daily, putting their students first, carrying forward the promise of education for all and providing the tools and support many disadvantaged youths need to reach their full potential.

As a nation, we have progressed toward Dr. King’s goals, however we still have much work to do. Today, let’s join in a renewed commitment to ensuring all children have access to high quality public schools, regardless of their race, background, or income.
