BREAKING: House Passes Overhaul of NCLB

POLITICO Pro reports that the House of Representatives has passed a bipartisan overhaul of the long-expired No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) by a vote of 359-64.

The bill, titled Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), unfortunately would keep some of the requirements from NCLB, such as annual testing of students in reading and math between grades three and eight. However, it would reduce the federal government’s role in education and return many decisions to the states about how to identify and intervene in poorly performing schools.

The Senate plans to vote on the bill next week. If it passes, President Barack Obama is expected to sign it into law.
