BASAS Receives Favorable Ruling from Mass. Department of Labor Relations

The Boston Association of School Administrators and Supervisors (BASAS), AFSA Local 6, has once again received a favorable ruling from the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations. In a decision dated December 13, the Department decided that the School Department violated state law by attempting to eject BASAS members from testifying at an arbitration regarding excessive number of uncompensated work hours that the Boston Public Schools (BPS) demanded of members assigned to certain schools.

The ruling helps safeguard member rights to give evidence in labor arbitration proceedings, a protected right under state law.  The school department has been ordered to cease and desist from interfering with those rights.  The school committee was also ordered to sign and post a “Notice To Employees” in all work locations promising not to act illegally in the future. The notice will also have to be emailed to all employees via the BPS internet.
