AFT Pushes for Kidnapped Professor’s Release

WASHINGTON –The American Federation of Teachers is pushing the State Department to campaign for release of yet another U.S. hostage, retired SUNY-Oswego Professor Warren Weinstein, kidnapped three years ago by al-Qaida in Pakistan.

Weinstein, now 73, is a member of SUNY’s AFT affiliate ,United University Professionals.  Late in 2013, in an al-Qaida video, he asked the Obama administration to negotiate for his release.  The video shows him in poor health, AFT President Randi Weingarten says.

Weinstein, a human rights activist, was an economic development consultant in Pakistan for seven years.  “We urge you to redouble your efforts to find Mr. Weinstein and bring him home safely to his family and community,” Weingarten wrote Secretary of State John Kerry.
