AFSA President Diann Woodard Statement on the Reopening of the Government

We are pleased the immediate crisis of the government shutdown and debt default has been averted. However, we remain concerned about the government’s temporary funding until January 15, 2014 and the debt ceiling’s extension until February 7th, creating the likely possibility of a repeat scenario.

What is most alarming is sequestration remaining in place under the agreement, which continues to slash funding for education and other critical programs. This ill-advised approach to reduce our nation’s deficit is causing undue harm to our nation’s students, schools, working families and our most vulnerable populations.

Congress must come up with a long-term solution to our nation’s fiscal matters, and to do so in a balanced and responsible way that does not inflict further pain on our nation’s families through further cuts to resources for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and education.
