AFSA Opposes Privatizing Pensions

On Tuesday, June 14, The House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Hearing: “Retirement Security: Challenges Confronting Pension Plan Sponsors, Workers, and Retirees” held a hearing to examine the status of private pension plans and challenges facing plan sponsors, workers, and retirees.

While some members of the committee support privatization of Social Security and Medicare, AFSA strongly opposes this approach that would shift all of the retirement and healthcare risks to the individual.

Retirees are heavily dependent on these benefits and AFSA urges members of Congress to protect the retirement security of our nation’s retirees by strengthening Medicare and Social Security programs.

AFSA will fight to protect employment-based retirement benefits for professionals who have often had to forgo wage increases during their working years, in exchange for these benefits when they retire and can no longer work.
