Tell Congress to Reauthorize ESEA Now!

Congress finally appears poised to vote on the long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

This version of ESEA is titled “The Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA), which will completely replace the flawed “No Child Left Behind Act”.

Your voice is critical in this process to ensure we get over the finish line. Please take a moment to contact your Members of Congress, and urge them to support ESSA. A sample letter (we encourage you to personalize it where possible) has been provided here:

While ESSA is not a perfect bill, we are supporting it because it moves away from a punitive law focused primarily on high stakes testing, to a law that will allow states, local districts, and educators to make improved student learning their top priority. Most importantly, we believe ESSA will provide much needed support to school leaders, as they strive to lead their schools, and provide all children with a quality education.

In addition, the legislation:

  • Eliminates one-size-fits-all accountability and an overreliance on standardized testing;
  • Removes the unworkable school turnaround models required under the School Improvement Grants (SIG) and Race to the Top, which call for the immediate dismissal of the principal;
  • Improves principal evaluations basing them on multiple measures of effectiveness or “in part on evidence of student achievement” instead of “in significant part on evidence of student achievement,” or primarily on test scores;
  • Does not include support for vouchers, portability or other threats to privatize public education.

Thank you for all that you do to help lead our nation’s public schools, and for your active involvement in making sure ESEA is finally reauthorized.
