2016 NY Fiscal Budget Includes Free Breakfast for Students

According to POLITICO Pro, free in-classroom breakfast for students is now included in the  NYC 2016 fiscal year budget. Anti-hunger advocates praised New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council for the decision, after months of lobbying.

The budget includes $17.9 million to provide in-classroom breakfast at 530 elementary schools and will reach 339,000 students by fiscal year 2018.

Josh Wachs, the chief strategy officer for Share Our Strength stated, “New York City students were the real winner in last night night’s budget deal.”

De Blasio explained how there are still union issues that are being worked through. “But we put the money in the budget because we were confident that we were on the pathway to resolving those issues.”
